Have you checked out your kid's car seats lately?
Since our daughter arrived I haven't been feeling great about our car seat set up as our eldest has been sitting in the third row (we have a compact 7 seater) which although legal, never felt as safe as him sitting in the middle row with our other two. Because of the size of our car, we didn’t think it would be possible to get all three in the second row and thought that we would need to purchase a bigger vehicle.
Before making any big decisions about a new car I wanted to be absolutely sure that we had considered all options and configurations and after a quick search online I found this awesome resource from NZTA where you can find a child restraint technician in your area. We lucked out in being able to book in with Simone, the Regional Injury Prevention manager from Plunket, and ended up spending a good hour chatting to her about our set up and the best options for our kids.
For $20 we got SO much information about car seat safety and I cannot think of better value for our time and money that we spent today.
The good news is that we don't need a new car, but the better news is that we now know with certainty that our children will be as safe as they can possibly be when travelling in our vehicle.
I am a member of the NZ Carseat Discussion Group which is another brilliant resource, but I don’t think you can beat having someone physically check your set up and answer any questions that are specific to your situation. The peace of mind that this has brought to my husband and I feels like a huge weight has been lifted that I didn’t even realize was there.
If you have any doubts whatsoever about how your children are seated and secured in your car, please consider finding a child seat restraint technician in your area by searching the NZTA database. The stats on road deaths in NZ are absolutely horrifying and none of us can presume we are safe on our roads. Making sure that our children are as safe as they can possibly be if we are in an accident is a responsibility that should not be taken lightly. I am so so glad that we took the time to do this today and I wish we had done it sooner.
